Hinch Distillery Selects Calor as Energy Partner to Drive Sustainability at New Facility

Hinch Distillery, the eagerly awaited whiskey and gin distillery in Co Down, selected Calor as its energy partner helping to ensure a more sustainable production facility. Hinch Distillery installed Calor BioLPG, the first widely-available renewable gas for homes and businesses, in a bid to reduce carbon emissions and increase its environmental performance.

Located in the grounds of the beautiful Killaney Estate between Belfast and Ballynahinch, Hinch Distillery’s commitment to sustainability is demonstrated across their business including both the Distillery itself and the substantial Visitors Centre with energy efficient LED lighting throughout and also high spec insulation for energy efficiency covering all the buildings. Another sustainability initiative included working with the Woodland Trust to plant 12,500 trees throughout the estate. By choosing Calor BioLPG, which is available across the island of Ireland, Hinch Distillery will see carbon reductions of at least 50% and up to 90% when compared with fossil fuels.

Local entrepreneur, Dr Terry Cross OBE, has invested in the 30,000 sq. ft. distillery which will produce Craft Hinch Irish Whiskey and Ninth Wave Irish Gin. Invest Northern Ireland has offered £1.9m of support towards the construction of the new distillery and investment in plant, machinery and equipment. The project is set to create 42 new jobs over the next five years.

The Distillery will open with public features such as a visitor centre, coffee shop, public restaurant, pub, outside courtyard space, multi-purpose events spaces catering for weddings to corporate events and a retail shop. Since its launch, the distillery has been awarded a number of accolades including Double Gold and 'Gin of the Year' at the China Wine and Spirit Awards (CWSA), and in February the limelight was on the company’s Hinch Whiskey which received a Silver Medal for its Five-Year-Old Double Wood at the World Whiskey Awards 2020.

Dr Cross OBE, Chairman of the new Hinch Distillery, commented:When planning and developing the specifications for Hinch Distillery, we were keen that at every stage of the project, sustainability would be at its heart.  The end result is an interactive experience we hope will become an attraction in its own right and offer guests a real understanding of the skills and craft needed to produce our spirits in an environmentally conscious manner.”

Mark Mc Clements, Sales Manager, Calor:Calor were delighted to be selected as an energy partner to supply our renewable energy – BioLPG, to Hinch Distillery. The team at Hinch have demonstrated clearly their sustainability principles, respecting and reflecting their surroundings throughout the development of the facility. We are delighted to be a partner in their on-going sustainability goals by meeting their renewable energy needs.”

Calor BioLPG is virtually identical to the LPG products that people are used to using every day. Unlike conventional LPG, which is a by-product of oil and gas exploration. BioLPG is made from recycled materials, including recycled waste and residue materials and sustainably-sourced renewable vegetable oils.
