Sustainability Priorities For Cavan-Based Terra Spirits & Liqueurs

Terra Spirits and Liqueurs, Bailieborough Co Cavan, is one of the latest businesses to switch to Calor BioLPG, the first commercially available, renewable LPG for homes and businesses.  BioLPG has gained significant interest from companies aiming to improve their environmental performance.  It is certified at EU level, fully audited and offers carbon reductions of at least 50% and up to 90% when compared with fossil fuels. For businesses like Terra which are serious about reducing their environmental impact, a switch to renewable BioLPG with the resulting reduction in carbon footprint was an obvious move.

Owned and run by the McKevitt family, Terra is the largest family owned cream liqueur producer in Ireland. With an impressive global distribution network, Terra is one of the longest established cream liqueur producers in the world, with roots going back to the very creation of the product category back in 1970s.

The team at Terra place a major emphasis on their sustainability goals with a pro-active approach to minimising their environmental impact. In the last few years this has meant they have achieved a dramatic reduction in waste, water and energy usage and in 2020 they are finalists in the 2020 SEAI Energy Awards which take place later in the year.

The switch to renewable BioLPG for their production processes has meant that by displacing usage of higher carbon fuels, they have reduced their carbon footprint with savings of over 130 tonnes of CO2 annually.

Shaun Mc Kevitt, Owner of Terra Spirits & Liqueurs explained the rationale for switching to BioLPG:

“At Terra, we are passionate about our environmental goals. We recognise the importance of operating sustainably, and our responsibility to play our part in protecting our local environment. We have worked tirelessly over recent years to make great strides in reducing our environmental impact and it was an obvious choice for us to make the switch to a renewable energy alternative like BioLPG.”

BioLPG is virtually identical in composition to conventional LPG that businesses and homeowners use every day. Unlike conventional LPG, which is a by-product of oil and gas exploration, BioLPG is produced from a mix of sustainable sources, including waste and residue materials and sustainably sourced renewable vegetable oils. Because BioLPG is virtually the same as conventional LPG, it works seamlessly with existing gas appliances and equipment.
