A Guide to Installing LPG in Your Home

LPG family home

Picture this: It’s a frosty winter morning. The wind is howling outside, the kids are rushing to get ready for school, and you’re about to boil the kettle for your first cup of tea. You want the house nice and toasty, but your current heating system just isn’t cutting it—or maybe you’re fed up with the soaring costs of oil or solid fuel. That’s where LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) steps in.

If high fuel prices or the lack of a mains gas connection have been frustrating you, you're not alone. Many Irish homeowners, especially in rural areas, are switching to LPG for a cleaner, more flexible, and reliable heating solution.

But what does installing LPG in your home involve? Is it safe? Will it save you money in the long run? In this guide, we’ll answer all these questions and more. We’ll explain how home LPG installation works, share safety tips, and highlight real-world benefits—helping you decide if LPG is right for you and your home.

What is LPG?

Before making any big change to your home’s energy setup, it’s worth understanding the “why” behind it.

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is a versatile and efficient energy source commonly used for heating, cooking, and powering appliances in homes. Comprising primarily propane and butane, LPG is stored in pressurised tanks, which can be installed either above or below ground. Unlike natural gas, LPG does not require a national pipeline connection, making it an ideal solution for homeowners, especially those in rural Ireland.

How does it work? Think of LPG as a portable, highly efficient fuel. The tank in your property—above or below ground— it's filled with LPG and connected directly to your boiler, hob, or other appliances. That means gas on tap without waiting for the mains network to reach you (which can be a long wait in some parts of Ireland). Even better, LPG burns cleaner than oil or solid fuel, helping you shrink your carbon footprint while keeping your home warm all year round.

Why install LPG at home instead of alternatives?

When it comes to heating your home, the options can feel endless: oil, electricity, natural gas, and solid fuel. If you’re after unmatched efficiency, cleaner emissions, reliable supply, and the freedom to heat your home without relying on the natural gas grid, LPG comes out on top. Here’s why:

Unmatched efficiency

LPG has a high calorific value, so it generates more heat per unit than many other fuels. In practical terms, you can warm your home faster and keep it comfortable for longer—perfect for those chilly, rainy Irish days.

  • LPG vs Oil: An LPG boiler often needs less upkeep and there are no risks of oil spills.

  • LPG vs Electricity: Electric rates can jump, especially if you’re on day/night tariffs. LPG typically stays more cost-stable over the colder months.

Cleaner emissions

If reducing your carbon footprint is high on your priority list, LPG is a strong step forward. It emits fewer greenhouse gases compared to other sources, so you can keep the heat cranked up without worrying as much about the environmental impact.

  • LPG vs Oil: No lingering smells or messy leaks, and fewer carbon emissions overall.

  • LPG vs Solid Fuel: While Ireland is transitioning to greener electricity, a significant portion still comes from fossil fuels. LPG provides a cleaner combustion method and helps reduce overall emissions until the grid becomes fully renewable.

Flexibility and freedom

One of the biggest perks of choosing to LPG for your home is that you don’t need a connection to the natural gas grid. You can live in the most remote parts of Ireland and still enjoy gas-powered heating, hot water, and cooking. If you love the instant control of a gas hob or dream of a gas BBQ, LPG has you covered.

  • LPG vs Natural Gas: If the pipeline doesn’t reach your area, LPG gives you a similar on-demand gas experience—no waiting for grid expansions.

  • LPG vs Oil: LPG can be used for heating, cooking, and even outdoor appliances (like BBQs using cylinders) without worrying about strong odours or spills. And, modern LPG tanks often have compact designs and advanced monitoring systems, so you’ll know exactly when you need a refill.

Reliable supply

Irish winters can be harsh, so you want a dependable fuel source. A trusted supplier like Calor will deliver on a schedule that suits you—no more waking up in a freezing house because you ran out of fuel overnight.

5 steps to installing LPG in your home

So, you’ve decided to install LPG in your home. Great! What’s next? Here’s a quick overview of the five main steps of LPG installation, from the first phone call to the moment you fire up your new system.

Step 1. Assess your home’s suitability

  • Requirements for domestic LPG tank installation: Above-ground tanks need enough garden or driveway space for a secure base. It must be 3 metres from buildings, boundary walls, sources of ignition and unsealed drains and gullies. There must also be a clear line of sight and access to the tank for refilling. Underground LPG tank installation options hide the tank out of sight but typically involve some excavation. The tank is still required to be 3 metres from any buildings, boundary walls, sources of ignition and unsealed drains and gullies.

  • Factor in future delivery access: An LPG truck must reach the tank easily, so watch out for narrow gates or overgrown hedges. The tank also must be visible while filling, so the driver needs to be able to see tank from the road.

  • Consider your specific household needs: How much LPG you’ll use for heating, cooking, and hot water? That helps determine the right tank size.

Step 2. Choose a reputable supplier

A good supplier does more than just drop off a tank of gas. They’re your partner for regular refills, maintenance, and peace of mind.

  • Experience & credibility: Check local reviews or ask Neighbours for recommendations.

  • Service options: Do they handle installation, maintenance, and emergency support?

  • Cost & contracts: Compare quotes, but remember that reliability and safety come first.

Step 3. Plan & design your LPG system

Once you pick a supplier, it’s time to plan your home LPG system installation:

  • Tank type: Your supplier will advise on the most suitable tank for your property/garden.

  • Pipework layout: Your installer will find the safest route from the tank to your appliances.

  • Safety features: Proper ventilation, carbon monoxide alarms, and relief valves are standard for LPG safety in homes.

Step 4. Installation

This is where it all comes together.

  1. Site prep – Clear and level the area. The tank should be placed on a stable, level surface to ensure safety. A concrete slab will be provided as part of your installation. If you’re going underground, a small excavation is done first.

  2. Tank delivery – Above-ground tanks sit on a secure base; underground tanks are lowered in and covered discreetly.

  3. Connecting pipework – Certified pros run external pipes to your home, then link them to your boiler, hob, or other LPG appliances inside.

  4. Testing & commissioning – The system is pressure-tested and checked for leaks. Once it’s all good, you’re ready to switch on your new heating system.

Step 5. Create a maintenance plan

An annual check-up keeps your system running smoothly. Many suppliers handle automatic deliveries, so you’ll never run out—especially on a chilly winter morning.

Tips for safe LPG installation and use

No matter what fuel source you choose, your safety should always be the top priority. With LPG, proper LPG gas tank installation is essential for ensuring safety, compliance with regulations, and optimal performance for residential and commercial energy needs.

  • Hire certified pros: No DIY shortcuts. A registered gas installer ensures everything is fitted correctly and meets safety standards.

  • Ventilation is vital: LPG-powered appliances need fresh air. Keep vents and airflow clear.

  • Install a CO alarm: Carbon monoxide (CO) is invisible and odourless. A small alarm near your appliances can be a lifesaver.

  • Book annual servicing: A yearly boiler check catches minor issues before they turn into major problems.

  • Know the warning signs: If you smell gas (LPG is given a “rotten egg” odour) or see a yellow flame instead of blue, turn off your supply and call Gas Networks Ireland (1800 20 50 50)
