Cultivating the Future: Calor Ireland's Support for CAFRE Agricultural Bursary

Mary Coughlin and Katelyn McConkey

In the verdant landscapes of Ireland, agriculture isn't just an industry; it's a way of life deeply ingrained in communities. Recognising the pivotal role of agriculture and the importance of investing in its future, Calor Ireland continue their sponsorship of the CAFRE Agricultural Bursary.

The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) is renowned for its dedication to agricultural education and innovation. Its programs equip aspiring farmers with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to thrive in an ever-evolving industry. However, pursuing higher education in agriculture can pose financial challenges for many students. This is where Calor Ireland's sponsorship of the CAFRE Agricultural Bursary provides pathways for aspiring agriculturalists.

Previous bursary winners have continued to higher education, gained international work experience, or invested in new projects.

This year’s winner, Katelyn McConkey explains why she chose to study at CAFRE; ‘It aligns with my hands-on learning style and emphasises active learning outdoors. CAFRE's focus on individualised attention and international travel opportunities during placements really stood out to me’. CAFRE fosters industry connections, promising job prospects post-graduation. Katelyn believes the Foundation Degree in Agriculture and Technology will equip her with practical and technical expertise, making her employable at supervisory levels. When asked how she plans to use her bursary ‘I plan to gain international experience on a large-scale dairy farm in New Zealand, bringing my experience back to Ireland, with the hopes to implement my learnings and manage my own dairy farm in the future’.

At its core, Calor Ireland is committed to sustainability, community support, and fostering a brighter future for all. Through its partnership with CAFRE, the bursary supports students allowing them to focus on their studies, pursue their passions, and ultimately contribute meaningfully to the agricultural landscape of Ireland.
